KM’s Week in Review:

Monday:  This week we are learning about the letter Z and our popcorn word is ONE.  We will also be working on reviewing all of the popcorn words, that we learned this year, this week.  The students learned about zebras, by listening to a nonfiction book, and they created a learning web to go with the book.  In science, we looked at the parts of a flower.  It is fun watching our sunflower seeds grow and grow!

Tuesday:

The students enjoyed a book titled Zink the Zebra.  The story was written by a young girl and it highlights the uniqueness and individuality of all of us.  It is a very sweet story.  We also spent some time working with clocks.  Many students are able to tell time to the hour, and we are also working on the half and quarter hour!

Wednesday:

The students listened to a fun story today, Zin, Zin Violin!  After the story, the students made words using the in word family.  Last night I soaked lima beans so that we could do our lima bean experiment today.  The kids were each given a couple soaked lima beans to open up.  Inside we looked at all of the seed parts and then labeled the parts as well.  The kids are becoming seed to plant experts!  J

Thursday:

It was fun making words today with the in word family.  The kids really enjoy making words and then asking a partner to read the new word!  Also, did you know that animals can strike at the zoo?!  Ask your child about the fun book we read Animal Strike at the Zoo. 

Friday:

Today was a really busy day!  We did our culminating activity for our LMC research project, Denise Flemming.  We created our own paper out of pulp, then our class created a book with the paper.  It will be dry in a week, so we can read the book we created as a class!  Thank you, Mrs. Gutmann!  It was a wonderful unit.  The students also worked on addition and subtraction number/word problems. 

KM’s Week in Review:

 Monday: 

This week our popcorn word is for and our letter is Jj.  The students are learning all about dictionaries this week and how to use them.  They were so excited to page through different kinds of dictionaries.  They looked through picture dictionaries along with other children dictionaries. 

Tuesday:

The students were busy today with different math activities.  They have really progressed in the area of adding and subtracting numbers to ten.  They had art today and enjoyed learning about different artists.  The students worked really hard and were able to spend some time in social centers. 

Wednesday:

Today we read Goldilicious and the students had to write all about the main character Pinkalicious.  They had to think about the story and write what she felt, touched, saw, heard etc.  They enjoyed the activity.  In math, the students worked on counting different combinations of coins. 

Thursday:

Today the students learned ways they can conserve energy and help the Earth.  They are looking forward to using their information at home and teaching you all about recycling, reducing and reusing.   J  They are young scientists!


Friday:

We had fun reading the book The Jester that Lost His Jingle and the kids were excited about writing a response to the book.  In math, we continue to practice identifying the coins, their values and telling time to the hour.

KM’s Week in Review:

Monday:
This week we are going to be focusing on the five reading strategies and how they help decode unfamiliar words.  Today the students practiced using picture clues as a reading strategy.  We will be learning about the letter Xx and our popcorn words are no and yes. 

Tuesday:

The students were busy today working on the “chunking” reading strategy.  They found it easy to use.  I sent home a sheet with all of the reading strategies that can be used at home.  I told the students it is a sheet they can keep handy while they are reading at home.  In math have been busy reviewing coins, working on telling time to the hour.   

Wednesday:

The students had fun today creating riddles and then reading them to the class.  A few of the riddles really stumped us!  The students enjoyed music and PE this afternoon.

Thursday:

We had a great time creating our own little creatures today!  The kids also worked on calendar skills, journal writing and reading at their independent level.  Kin-Connect and music filled our afternoon.

Week in Review

KM’s Week in Review:

Monday:
This week we will focus on the letter K and our popcorn word is have.  This week the students are working on identifying story elements (main characters, setting, problem and solution) and how to put them into a story map.  We read the book Lilly’s Big Day, by Kevin Henkes and enjoyed the story!  Lilly had a great solution to her problem!  J  We also identified the shapes, played I Spy Shapes in the classroom and created pictures using pattern blocks.  It was a fun day!

Tuesday:

Today we read Pinkalicious and discussed the story elements as a class.  The students are getting better at identifying the story elements.  Then the students were put into pairs where they completed a story map together.  Another success!  The dime was introduced today.  It is important for the students to know the coins and to be able to identify their amount by the end of the school year.  Thank you for all of the extra practice and support you provide at home. 

Wednesday:

Today the students had a great time creating colorful shamrocks to hang from our classroom ceiling.  They are really pretty!  The students continue to work hard during Daily 5 and are making improvements in both reading and writing.  They are becoming fluent readers and creative writers! 

Thursday:

I am so proud of the students because they earned a Kendall Kritter this morning!  They earned it because they left their lunch tables clean yesterday after they ate lunch.  J  How respectful and responsible!  They have earned a celebration because they have made another trip around the world.  Tomorrow the students will be able to bring their favorite stuffed animal to school.  Also, Mrs. Resler came today and taught the Kin-Connect for the month of March.  The students had fun learning about St. Patrick’s Day. 

Friday:

The kids had a great time today with their stuffed animals!  I am so proud of them!  They have been respectful and responsible students.  They also are being active listeners and learners.  Keep it up, KM!  We continue to review the coins and their values, in addition to learning time to the hour.  The students have also done a fabulous job this week and understand the story elements in a story.

KM’s Week in Review:

Monday:

No School

Tuesday:

No School

Wednesday:  We spent most of the day learning all about President’s Day!  The President of the US sure has a very big job!  We also focused on Abraham Lincoln and what a wonderful and honest man he was.  We made a log cabin and learned about the funny jokes he play on his family.   Springfield, IL is a very educational place to visit!

Thursday:  We moved on to discuss George Washington and how he was the first President of the US.  He did not want to be the President; however, he gave it his all and did a great job!  The kids had fun making their own “George Washington.”

Friday:  We have learned so many fun and interesting facts about presidents!  Today we were able to write and draw rules we would like to make if we were presidents.  We enjoyed sharing them.  We read two books about our current Mr. President B. Obama.  It was a great week!

KM’s Week in Review:

 Monday:
This week we are focusing on the letter Hh.  Our sight word is you.  The students listened to the classic story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  The students really enjoyed creating a list of what the caterpillar ate! 
Tuesday:   
Happy Valentine’s Day!!  Thank you to all of the parents who were able to come and volunteer at the party today.  We are all so appreciative of all of the parents!  It was fun making Valentine bags and reading many Valentine books. 
Wednesday: 
We continued to celebrate Valentine’s Day today reading books and doing some writing projects.  We also spent time using craft sticks to make patterns and then played a dice game.  Math is fun! 
Thursday:
Reading to someone is Daily 5 is really enjoyed by the students.  I can see the pride on their face when they read aloud to their friends and reading to others promotes their confidence.  It is also really good for the students to hear their friends reading aloud to them!
Friday:
Today we have been busy doing activities with the letter Hh, rhyming words and discussing opposites.  We had a great time learning about Zhen during his All About Me!
